Vaughan's 67 Aussie Beetle
1st Day Home

After purchasing the car sight unseen on the 8th of June 2000 I drove it home on the 10th of June. I bought it sight unseen as the car was advertised for sale on Geelong (2 hours away).

As my parents live in Geelong and my Dad is automotively knowledgable I asked Dad to go check it out. I had put him in a bit of a spot as he wasn't really familiar with Beetles at all.

He did tell me that it was missing the bonnet "VW" badge and some evidence of minor and incidental rust but that it was a Deluxe and mechanically appeared to be fine.

Armed with that knowledge and a desire to own a pre 68 model Beetle I asked him to buy it. That weekend I drove down to get the car. The battery was flat as a tack and would not start of its own accord.

Fortunitely, my parents live on a hill so I thought I' just roll down the hill and start her. Something I had done penty of times in my early driving years while living with Mum and Dad.

No luck cos no start. "Great" I thought, as I've got a 2 hour 200 kms drive home. Armed with a toe rope (thought it might come in handy) My wife helped me tow the car to a start. What a glorious sound that came eminatling from the back. Not as noisy as I expected it would be.

Even though the car had been garaged to 3 years and presumably no maintenance the car drove home without any problems. I did notice that the left rear shock absorber was noisily rattling away and with 3 cross plys and one bold radial tyre the roadholding left much to be desired.

The 67 Beetle got to 100kmh quicker than I would have thought and easily cruised at that speed for 2 hours. What a car!

You should be able to make out evidence of a rear impact around the bumper support bracket on the left side.

In the background there you can see Liselot one of 4 horses we own. My wife's the Horsey one. She is into dressage for those interested.

As you can see this car has small apperture windows on the side. What you can't see here is that the front bumper is angled upwards. its more noticable from if you are looking at the car head on.

In the background you can see our Holden Commodore Station Wagon.

Front of the Beetle on 1st day home

You can see my broken horn ring and indicator stalk. The interior is very original nothing has been tampered with too much. The only modification is an additional knob on the dash.

Close up of the under bonnet area. Notice the rust in the upper left portion of the quarter pannel where the weather striping goes.

Also you'll see a few extras that came with the car. I also got two extra wheels rims with tyres.
